Card skimming is a scheme that involves placing an electronic device on an ATM that records customers’ account information and PINs in an attempt to steal from their accounts. These devices are usually unnoticeable by users.
According to the FBI {Link: (https://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/atm-skimming)} skimming can also involve a hidden camera installed near the atm in order to record the entry of PINs into the keypad. Most skimming devices are installed for only a short time so they may only be attached by nothing more than double sided tape. Burroughs’ technicians have found skimmers that look nearly identical to the actual card reader and required a trained eye to discover them.
a. Just like your staff does, tell your customers to report it if they see anything loose, crooked, or damaged, or if you notice scratches or adhesive/tape residue
b. When entering their PIN, block the keypad with your other hand to prevent possible hidden cameras from recording your number.
c. If possible, use an ATM at an inside location (less access for criminals to install skimmers).
d. Be careful of ATMs in tourist areas…they are a popular target of skimmers.
e. If your card isn’t returned after the transaction or after hitting “cancel,” immediately contact the financial institution that issued the card.
